Neglected Newcastle on Tyne

I am not suggesting that Newcastle looks or feel neglected, it is just a place overlooked by tourists and unfairly critiqued by UK citizens. Yet this ancient settlement at the North of England has a lot going for it. It is well worth a day or three to visit. In Roman times, the city was a fort on Hadrian’s wall known as Pons Aelius.  William the Conqueror in 1080 commanded his son to construct a “New Castle” on the site of the old Roman fort. For many years, a grim industrial city, the loss of UK manufacturing has transformed the…

I Hike Hadrians Wall across England

There are many crazy things I like to do in life. One is walking long distances! I have walked several long distance tracks in Australia, the UK and New Zealand now including the famed NZ Milford track.  One of my goals was to walk the width of England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea following the path of Hadrian’s wall. 84 miles (140km) long. And I did it! It took seven days walking West to East. To back track, Hadrian’s Wall was built in the 2nd Century AD by the order of the Roman Emperor…

Reviewing 2014-How do you measure your travel?

As I reflect on 2014, I pondered how do I measure my travel? 1. By Kilometres, miles or points? In 2014 I covered: 3000km (2000 miles) by train 4000km (2500 miles) by bus 12000km by rental car (7000 miles) 124,754 (77.5k) by air to or from 22 airports. I flew four new airlines bringing my total number of air carriers to 91 airlines! The new ones were: Burma’s Air KBZ, Bangkok Airways Finnair (review coming Tuesday) and Germania   2. The Goals I achieved? In 2014, I completed my first (and last) marathon in Berlin, Germany hiked across…

Where you will find the Concorde

As mentioned yesterday, it is 11 years since Concorde last flew. Sadly, the closest I have ever got to Concorde was at the Seattle air museum, Heathrow airport and CDG airport in Paris. I have the germ of an idea of going to visit all of the remaining Concordes around the world. As most are in the UK and France, that should not be too hard! Adding Barbados in, is a little trickier. 001:F-WTSS Prototype – flew 1969 to 1973  Museum of Air and Space, Le Bourget, France 002 – flew 1969 to 1976:  Fleet Air Arm Museum,…

I am walking Half a Million Steps this month- seriously!

In September, I am aiming to walk half a million steps. The average office worker takes just 3,000 steps a day so I am aiming to walk five times that! This is my contribution to the Steptember charity event which raises funds and awareness for Cerebral Palsy (CP). I will be walking those steps in seven countries: Australia, Denmark, England, Germany, Netherlands and Thailand. A chunk of my half a million steps will be achieved when I walk along Hadrian’s Wall in the north of England starting in just over a week’s time. This walk is one of my bucket…

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and A380 at Farnborough

The Farnborugh airshow is held in mid-July in even-numbered years at Farnborough Airport, England. The airport is 35 kilometres (22 miles) from Londom. This year’s show celebrated 100 years of commercial Aviation. One impressive display was the 787-9, shown here practising for its routine: The other show stopper was the acrobatic antics of the 380. In this vidoe, you can catch a glimpse of the new A350 taking off at five minutes 45seconds just before the A380 lands at six minutes 12 seconds Related Posts 110 years today– wright brothers take off Trip Review: Emirates- comparing the…

Cornwall Captivates Me

Cornwall sits at the westernmost part of the south-west of Great Britain and as a result is often left off people’s travel itineraries. I believe Cornwall needs to sit at the top of people’s lists of destinations to visit in the UK. Around five million people visit annually but most are from England. Aesthetics: 10 out of 10 Cornwall  covers an area of 3,563 sq km (1,376 sq mi). It is a little bigger than Rhode Island and one and a half times the size of Australia’s ACT. Its population is 535,300 people.  Some of the most stunning landscapes in…

Seven hours in Eden

In the middle of Cornwall, England near the town of St Austell, England is a piece of Eden. The Eden Project, was  built the Eden Project in Cornwall in a disused clay mine, opening ten years ago. The project is about regenerating the environment and introducing it to the public. For example, when the Eden Project started, the site was so bad it had been used as the scene of a ruined alien plante in a BBC TV series. Getting there Train to St Austell station. From there were two choices of bus. Tip: When buying the train ticket, add a St Austell Bus plus onto the fare. It…
