My membership year for Qantas finishes soon. I had intended to keep my Qantas Gold Status for another year. With Qantas announcing, their double status credit promotion last week, this changed. Enticed by the earning of double the number of status credits on every flight booked between now and May 4th for travel until 16th April, 2o17, I began a stocktake of my miles situation.
A few bookings later, it looked like I would be close to Qantas Platinum! Platinum gives access to One World First Class lounges internationally and Business Class in Australia. The Qantas First Lounge in Sydney is one of my favourite lounges in the whole world! It came sixth on the airline quality Top Ten lounge list last year. Priority check in, seating, upgrades and boarding are also attractive!
In addition, I am getting within striking distance of gold for life!
So, a mileage run is in order. After doing the calculations for cost per status credit, I had settled on a long complicated trip up and down the East Coast of Australia. Then I found a very cheap business fare from Auckland, New Zealand to Sydney, Australia. So adding in a cheap economy across to Auckland gives me 200 Status Credits – enough to get that magic Platinum status and make me just a few more flights off Gold for life! So I zip across to Auckland this month for 36 hours! Am planning to go up to the Bay of Islands whilst there!
I have not done many mileage runs in my life. I prefer to plan my travel through the year to ensure I build toward my status without utilising that dash. My last run was a New Year’s holiday in Samoa to keep my United Airlines status! This opportunity is an exception.
How about you? Are you a mileage runner?
