Qantas Airways on Thursday, this week announced an agreement with Emirates after months of speculation. Qantas CEO Alan Joyce called it  “the biggest deal in Qantas history“. Qantas have publicly declared it is “The World’s Leading Airline Partnership” The ten year deal, yet to be approved by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (which I see  as a formality) means Qantas will shift its main hub for London flights from Singapore to Dubai fly daily Airbus A380 services from both Sydney and Melbourne to London via Dubai adding to Emirates 84 services  a week out of…

Kingfisher D day closer?

In the airline world, Kingfisher Airlines faces a meeting with its bankers – 17 banks have over  70 billion rupees ($US 1.26 billion) in advances to the carrier. The carrier has not serviced this debt since January, 2012. Kingfisher airlines also has an accumulated loss of over Rs. 80 billion rupees ($US1.4 billion). Since its launch in May 2005, the airline has never made profit. It has not been paying salaries consistently for a year now. The result has been a series of rolling strikes by staff for payment of wages. Last week, the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), said Kingfisher must…

LAN gets 787

Boeing keeps churning out the 787s!  LAN Airlines, received delivery of the first 787 Dreamliner  yesterday. The new plane arrived in Santiago, Chile September 1st, making it the first airline in the Americas to receive the new airplane. LAN is one of my favourite airlines. I have always found them a delight to travel with. LAN has ordered 32 planes that will be phased in over the next 10 years at a cost of almost five billion dollars. The destinations the 787 will fly to during its first year of operation will be Santiago, Buenos Aires, Lima, Los Angeles,…

Aerolíneas Argentinas Joins SkyTeam

The Flag carrier for Argentina joined SkyTeam today. Forty of their 52 destinations are new for the alliance. Aerolíneas is a Skytrax three star airline. Their 265 customer reviews onSkytrax gives them an average rating of 4.2 out of ten. This is a major reason why I have never flown them. No one I know who has flown them has a good word to say for them. But then they are part of an alliance with Aeroflot (3 star: 4.7 out of 10) Alitalia (3 star: 4.7 of 10) CZA: Czech (3 star: 5.2 out of 10)…

Qantas Loses Money and Cancels 35 787-9s

At a Qantas media conference today, the public were informed that the group made a statutory loss after tax of $244 million.  Its first loss for 20 years. The group had a $95 million profit before tax. Again, Qantas shareholders will receive no dividend. Record high fuel costs of $4.3 billion, up $645 million made a major dent. We also found out the cost of the industrial action and grounding of the Qantas fleet ($194 million). What we didn’t find out was the actual cost of the industrial action versus the grounding. Of the industrial action, some cost the company nothing (for…

PLUNA Plunges [updated]

Don’t blog at 4am! Apologies for moving Pluna and its bankruptcy to the wrong country! And with friends from both countries, I should know better. PLUNA Líneas Aéreas Uruguayas S.A., headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay (not Paraguay) was the country’s 75 year old flag carrier. The company was liquidated by its owner the Government of Uruguay on  5th July 2012, two days after employees went on strike. The airline had a mixed history of ownership and a series of financial losses. Thats the 17th airline to vanish in 2012 and the third flag carrier to go this year (Malev and…
