Choosing an Airline in South Africa

Booked to fly SAA for the first time in April, 2012 from Perth, Australia to Johannesburg on one of their Airbus A340-300s. My seat request is in the emergency exit. Anyone flown with SAA? Any advice? Tips? Also, I am doing a couple of internal flights. The logical thing would be to fly British Airways because I get lounge access, points etc but I am also curious to try the other airlines too. Air Australia–Where does a new Carrier fit?

Since the start of aviation , Australia’s domestic airline market has been largely composed of two major national airlines. From time to time the cozy duopoloy is challenged by a new entrant with a blaze of low fares.The latest such carrier is Air Australia. 2011 Background Twelve months is a long time in aviation. Qantas the dominant domestic carrier suffered a series of rolling disputes in 2011 culminating in the dramatic three day grounding of the carrier’s services. My best and worst airlines of 2011 [Updated]

Okay, time for my annual review of airlines to see who I give top and bottom billing to. I rate every airline on every flight i fly vis a vis their offerrings from booking to landing. On my rating scale 5 out of 5 is an almost perfect travel experience. Singapore Virgin- What does it mean?

Virgin Australia now has formal approval for an alliance between itself and Singapore Airlines Ltd. What does this mean for us passengers? Velocity Platinum and Gold members (thats me!) receive complimentary entry on day of travel into Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer Gold Lounges at Changi Airport, Singapore when travelling Economy Class with Singapore Airlines. Travelling Business or First class means access to the much nicer SilverKris lounge (Yeah in this case the Gold lounge is far inferior to the Silver. Air NZ Struggling

My second favourite airline Air NZ has been losing $NZ1 million per week on long haul traffic. It is now investigating ways to cut $NZ100 million out of expenses. Some of the rumours I have heard are: reducing London flights  (NZ flies to Heathrow via Los Angeles and via Hong Kong every day) pulling out of London altogether handing sectors over from LAX and HK to Virgin Atlantic slashing hundreds of jobs halting all “large  projects” (the message from Air NZ CEO Rob Fyfe: “no sacred cows”) reducing the quality of meals and service in…

Virgin Australia absorbs Pacific Blue and V Australia

Once upon a time (August, 2000 to be exact), a new airline was launched in Australia to challenge the two long standing carriers: Ansett and Qantas. That airline was Virgin Blue. The name was chosen in a competition playing on the Australian custom of calling a redhead Blue or Bluey. I flew Virgin Blue 12 times around Australia and rated them 4.4 out of 5. AA Bankruptcy Restructure- What does it mean? [Updated]

As I suggested on October 4, American Airlines has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In its petition filed in New York,  AMR reported assets of $24.72 billion and liabilities of $29.55 billion. The company has $4.1 billion in cash. They have lost about 50 billion dollars in the last decade. The bankruptcy will give the carrier the opportunity to reduces its debt levels.  A chapter 11 filing allows for a reorganisation. Qantas Social Media Backlash

If Qantas, the Australian airline had any doubt as to how the Australian public feel about the once iconic brand, then their latest Social Media campaign has shown them the truth. Fry Tweets Qantas A380 Failure

British actor and Tweetaholic Stephen Fry was en route from Sydney to London today aboard a Qantas A380 operating as QF 31. Four hours out from Singapore, the plane was diverted to Dubai due to engine problems. Bizarrely one year to the day since a Qantas A380 Rolls Royce Trent 900 engine shredded in what could have been a disaster for that airliner. More on Qantas: Reaction to the Grounding

Roy Morgan has released results, from their regular phone poll survey of public opinion in Australia.  Som key feedback from the Australian public suggets that respondents were: more inclined to blame management (56%) than the unions (42%) for the shutdown overall disapproving of the shutdown with 61% against it and 35% approving wanting federal government sooner (64%) -with 32% disagreeing This suggests that the Qantas Board and Management have a long row to hoe to get Australians to support their move and new directions.
