Jetstar at ten

I make no secret of my dislike of Jetstar (JQ), the low cost arm of Australian airline Qantas. We have never really bonded. I am not alone according to the complaints on the Don’tflyjetstar website. Some would say that Jetstar has been then saviour of Qantas and others would say the advancement of the budget carrier has come at the cost of the mainline carrier. The story started when QANTAS acquired Impulse Airlines, a Newcastle based independent carrier. It took its lessons from that to launch Jetsar in May 2004. The aim was to compete directly…

Man uses bag on lavatory less flight

What would you do on a two hour 50 minute flight in a plane without a bathroom? Not fly? Ask for the plane to be diverted? Use a bag on the plane? An  incident on 30 April 2014, on an Air Canada Express flight from Deer Lake (YDF) on the west coast of Newfoundland to Wabush (YWK) in Western Labrador is being widely reported today. Air Canada Express is the brand name for “feeder flights” in Canada.  The flight operator (not Air Canada) reportedly substituted the regular plane due to a mechanical problem with the…

Riding the Yangon Circle Train

I have been wanting to ride this train for years.  The Yangon Circular Railway is a British built train line that connects Yangon Central station (pictured above) with inner city suburbs, impoverished towns and semi- country villages in a 46 kilometre (28.5 mile) long loop with 39 stations. Trip Adviser users rate it as the seventh best attraction in Yangon with people saying “a trip of a life time” and  “Excellent way to watch everyday life in yangon“.   Some of the key stations with close by attractions include: Pagoda Road for Bogyoke Market and Holy…

Martial Law in Thailand- Staying Safe [Updated]

Update: Thursday 22nd May, 2014 16:30h  Local Time : The Situation in Thailand has changed and the army has taken full control dismissing the government. Its food is unparalleled, beaches beautiful, people lovely, shopping bargains superb and reputation for wild and fun times unsurpassed. Sadly Thailand also has a history and a culture for military interventions for nine decades. According to media sources, the Royal Thai Army declared martial law nationwide at 3am Tuesday 20 May local time (Monday, 19 May: 8pm GMT or 1pm US West Coast time).  Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha said the…

Future Options for Malaysia Airlines?

A friend of mine has just purchased a round trip ticket with Malaysia airlines for travel between Thailand and Australia via Malaysia for a fraction over $US500. This trip of  7 804 km (4,849 miles) normally sits at around $1100 to $1200. A good deal is around $700. Such is the desire to get people onto their planes, that Malaysia Airlines is discounting heavily. The discounts are designed to match arch rival Air Asia and attract passengers “scared off” Malaysia Airlines after the disappearance of Flight 370 on 8th March. The appearance of a Skytrax…

Bangkok Airways ad declares love

This Bangkok Airways ad brought a smile on my face in parts and made me laugh loudly in others! To the background of the 80’s song “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You“, the ad shows in a slightly satirical sense, real-life experiences of  air crews as they deal with a range of “interesting passengers“. The airline says they are attempting to show both Thai passengers and “farang” (foreigner) that their “exceptional service” comes from a “deep personal attitude“. Some people have labelled the ad “genius” and others “embarrassing“. Check it out and see what you…

Air KBZ to Yangon, Myanmar (Burma)

One thing I didn’t want to do was fly internally in Myanmar! The fledgling airline industry does not have a great safety record. After our long train trip from Mandalay to Bagan, we realised, however that a ten hour train trip from Bagan to Yangon would take too much time out of our schedule so I reluctantly agreed to fly!   Booking: 7/10 The country has seven local airlines registered: Air Bagan; Air KBZ, Air Mandalay, Asian Wings, Golden Myanmar Airlines; Myanmar Airways International and Yangon Airways. Our first choice was Asian Wings because they  are 49 per cent owned by Japan’s ANA. Unfortunately,…
