It has been a couple of years since I have been focussed on writing about vanishing airlines. The last couple of years have been a bit crazy, haven’t they? The airline industry in 2022 was marred by a mad scramble to get flights back across the world. For passengers, our experiences have been marked by crowded conditions, lost luggage, massive delays and high airfares. In the midst of that, several carriers went bust. Of the airlines, that ceased in 2022, two were ones I was really sad about (Comair/Kalulua). One had an interesting concept and…
2021: A Year of Exploring Thailand
After spending most of 2020 grounded in the haven that was Thailand, my 2021 travel goals were scaled right back! Even those meagre goals were frustrated as lockdowns shut most of the country down for months, with no internal plane, bus or train services and with car travel severely limited. Even so, I enjoyed 15 of Thailand’s 66 provinces in the weeks that travel options existed! In the North, I managed a couple of trips to one of my favourite cities: Chiang Mai. The city boasts a plethora of attractions, including ancient temples, bustling markets,…
Emergency Numbers – Full list from across the world
This is an updated post from two years ago. I have added several COVID19 numbers, n this current situation with travel starting again for many and COVID19 still impacting people, you need to know the emergency numbers of the country(ies) you are going to? In many parts of the world, people believe the emergency phone number is 911, the North American response number. It is not universal nor is 999, the UK number. 112 has become standard in many parts of the world but not everywhere. Also, in some countries, there is one number for…
Which airport is this?
Which Australian airport was I taking off from on 5th January, 2015? I have flown into and out of this city 108 times and travelled there by car, train and bus. I even hitched there once in my 20s! Its my second favourite Australian city! Related Posts How I got hooked on Flightmemory.com (from 2011!)
A Year of Walking Thailand
In 2021, my goal was to walk or run 2,400KM (1,440 miles) which is kind of a lot in a year! With lockdowns in Thailand (where I am based) shutting down pubs, clubs, restaurants, pools, gyms, beaches, parks and shops for most of the year there was little else to do but walk in 34 to 37 degrees Celsius (93 to 94 Fahrenheit). The result was I actually reached a record for me of 3212 kilometres Yes, I should have pushed to get to that magic 2000 miles! This is almost the same distance as…
A Year for Kindness?
It is 2022….how many acts of kindness did we do in 2021? In this crazy world at this crazy time, kindness does not go astray. This is my challenge for 2022. Stay safe
Etihad’s Arty Safety Video
In 2017, the Louvre Abu Dhabi was opened as part of a 30-year agreement between the city of Abu Dhabi and the French government. This week, the airline of Abu Dhabi, Etihad launched a safety video filmed on location at Louvre Abu Dhabi. The three minute 27 second English safety and slightly sorter Arabic safety demonstration include shots from the building and art pieces. The architect for the building was Jean Nouvel, who also designed the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris in 1987. He has also designed a Museum of Art, Seoulin South Korea…

Air Namibia Abruptly Shuts Down
As someone with part of their heart in Africa and a fascination with rail and air transport across that magnificent continent, I was very sad to learn that 75 year old Air Namibia is no more. Today, 636 staff lost their jobs, as the Namibian flag carrier was put into liquidation by it’s only shareholder, the country’s government. The staff will be reportedly paid 12 months salary as severance but receive no benefits. Air Namibia had been advertising Valentine’s Day Specials just two days ago. The website is no longer taking bookings. Four A319-100s, two…
Etihad Inoculates 100% of Staff
Etihad (لِلطَّيْرَان) of the United Arab Emirates and Singapore Airlines have been working to get all staff inoculated against COVID-19. Singapore had 90% of its staff registered for a vaccine dose by the end of January, 2021 but Etihad appears to have beaten them to it with its claim that all of its pilots and cabin crew member have been innoculated with a vaccine. To do so, the Etihad Airways Medical Centre became an accredited Covid-19 vaccination clinic in December 2020 and Tony Douglas, Group CEO took the vaccine on 4th January, 2021 and staff…
