Emirates: No Match

a large airplane flying in the sky

Its like being turned down by someone you most like! Ever had that experience? I just asked Emirates, my favourite airline, for a “status match” with Qantas where I hold  Gold Frequent Flyer Status. One of the difficulties of being “high status” with one airline is that it does “lock you in”. Gold Status comes with express check in, lounge access, bonus frequent flyer points and higher luggage allowances. I have Blue Status (the basic level with Emirates) because I frankly haven’t flown them enough. They don’t fly on most of  the routes, I have…

Tribute to the Plane Crews of September 11

Fragments from N334AA Our view of the world changed forever on September 11, 2001 when four planes were hijacked by Al-Qaeda sponsored terrorists. 2976 victims and 19 hijackers died when all four of the planes crashed- two into the the twin towers of the World Trade Center, one into the Pentegon and one into a Pennsylvanian field.  All airspace was closed and all non-emergency civilian aircraft in the USA grounded immediately with five hundred international flights turned back. I want to pay tribute to the flight crews, cabin crews and passengers on the four hijacked flights. American Airlines flight 11 Boston Logan to LAXBoeing…

For my 737th flight, I flew a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 from Portland to Spokane and had a brilliant flight.747th was on a Qantas 747 from Melbourne to Los Angeles. The Qantas team put on a great flight- and Qantas even followed up with a souvenir 747 in the postUnited Airlines turn came next with flight 757 on a B757 from DC to LAX and it was terrible. 767 is fast approaching on an Air NZ Boeing 767 Business…

Hotel Club Fails Me — again

It was midnight on a wintery June night in, New Zealand, when I arrived at my hotel. I had flown from Australia which is not a long trip but it sill involves several hours of travel. It was late and I was tired. There was one guest in front of me. The guy said to him: “you are lucky I have one room left“. Hearing that, I was so glad I had my printed confirmed booking. I stepped up to the counter and introduced myself to the pleasant reception guy. He tapped on his computer, frowned, tapped…
