Air Zim flies with No Passengers
Air Zimbabwe flew an an empty 767 from Johannesburg to Harare on Monday November 12th. The plane which has seats for 203 passengers had flown in the morning to Johannesburg from Harare International with five passengers. There were nine crew aboard including two pilots, a first flight officer, an engineer and six flight attendants. This was a result of nil marketing by the airline about its resumed services after its latest grounding. Since then, the airline has launched new cheap fares offering round trips to Johannesburg for 420 US dollars .This compares to South Africa Airways 630 US Dollar return…
Exit Row “safety”?
I was flying Turkish Air from Istanbul to Budapest. I have already commented in a previous post that I find it odd that on this flight English and Turkish are used but no one on the Cabin Crew seems to speak Hungarian. I was seated in the Emergency Exit aisle. Next to me in the middle and window seats were two gentlemen who spoke only Hungarian. One of the flight attendants came down for a briefing. She says in Turkish followed by English: “You are aware that you are sitting in the Emergency Exit?” Middle Seat guy beams at…
Air Koryo Goes Online
Few people have flown Air Koryo. The North Korean carrier officially has 14 destinations in six countries. It reportedly has a fleet of 30 old mostly Soviet aircraft which are usually grounded due to lack of fuel and or parts. Video of the fleet can be found here. Combined with an erratic schedule and a one star Skytrax rating, the airline has been described as “the world’s worst airline“. Following a visit to the airline’s headquarters in July, 2012, by the country’s new leader, Kim Jong-un, the airline has reportedly attempted to modernise. The carrier has launched an on line booking service: www.airkoryo.com.kp giving customers “easier,…
You are carrying what?
One wonders how a man dressed in a bulletproof vest and fire-resistant pants and travelling with a smoke grenade, gas mask, leg irons and weapons managed to fly from Japan to Los Angeles via Seoul unmolested. Yongda Huang Harris, 28, a US citizen was arrested on Friday 5th October, 2012 ta Los Angeles airport, on “suspicion of transporting hazardous materials “, an offence that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. In his checked luggage, Harris was carrying knives, body bags, a hatchet, a collapsible baton, a biohazard suit, a full-face respirator, billy clubs, a respirator,…
Do I look Pregnant in this?
While waiting to board a Wellington to Christchurch, Jetstar flight in New Zealand, Kelsey Hughes was stopped from boarding by an employee who asked her if she had a medical certificate to fly. Hughes: ‘A medical certificate? No, why?‘, Jetstar Employee: You need a medical certificate to fly with your pregnancy. Jetstar policy states that passengers who are 28 or more weeks pregnant need to carry a letter from a doctor or midwife starting that they are fit to fly. Ground and cabin crew are expected to check if they believe a passenger is pregnant.…
Would you wear this?
It may not look great but kawamura-ganjavian, a European architecture and design studio, have claimed this device the “Ostrich Pillow” will help travellers counter the ill effects of jet lag on long-haul flights by enabling power naps “anytime, anywhere”. As you can see, the “pillow” has a hole for a user’s head, mouth hole designed to allow breathing and two side holes for your hands, if napping at a table for example, as illustrated below. Kawamura-Ganjavian, a Swiss-Spanish consortium behind the pillow say: “We have tried it in airports, trains, aeroplanes, libraries, at the office, on a sofa and even…
Croc on the Plane
In the 2006 film, snakes are deliberately released on a 747. en route to Los Angeles. On Monday September 17, a baggage handler in Melbourne, Australia upon opening the cargo door of a Qantas passenger flight found a small crocodile loose in the hold. The reptile had escaped from its container during the two hour flight from Brisbane, Australia. The reptile was safely re-captured without a problem and no baggage handlers lost a hand or finger. The airline and cargo handling company Australian Air Express are investigating how the crocodile got out of its cage. Related Posts Stop…
Bollywood Epic: Air India’s 787
Wasn’t sure this was going to happen but State-run carrier Air India’s first Boeing 787 has been delivered! The plane touched down at Terminal 3 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport on September 8th at around 1700h (5pm). Behind the delivery is a saga of Bollywood proportions! First up, there is Air India’s precarious financial state. There was talk that the carrier may simply sell the planes to another carrier. Add to that, a dispute between Boeing and Air India over compensation for the four year delay in delivery. Three of the 787s have sat waiting in South Carolina for…
Honey, guess what we lost today?
Normally my whacky Wednesday posts are funny or at least a little amusing. Today’s is far from amusing. United Airlines, who I regularly bag, bash and mock in my blog are apparently in the business of transporting luggage and people around the USA. According to Brett Snyder, they are doing worse since the merger with Continental (vale). For example only 70.1 percent of their flights were on time in June. In addition, United lost bags at twice the rate of Delta which is a bigger airline. Luggage being lost is annoying. On June 30, 2012 United Airlines lost a bag…
