Impressive Packing: 12 months (130 items) of necessities into a carry on

In this impressive video, Rachel Grant packs over 100 items including 23 dresses plus shoes and toiletries into a small suitcase. There are some great packing tips including: using space saving packing cubes placing rubber bands around shoes rolling clothes using zip lock bags stuffing shoes with balled socks Lots to learn here even if you have been a long time traveller. I am not sure that the carry on would comply with most airline weight limits, however. (yes I know it is an ad for a bag but its still impressive!)   Related Posts…

The A to Z of what NOT to pack in your baggage

Following my post warning about checking in batteries, I began thinking through what else should not fly. Out of my 1120+ flights, on five occasions I have checked luggage that has not arrived.  As a result, I have had to report to the “lost luggage room”. I have been amazed at what other people declare what they have in their luggage! In summary, do not put anything valuable, dangerous and illegal in your checked baggage: A. Antiques, Art objects, artifacts, furs, Game trophies, antlers, and pelts, heirlooms and sculptures – ship them home with insurance B. Batteries; car batteries, wet cell…

New Years Dreams

It is half way through August and we are  debating where to spend New Year’s Eve. Last year was in Hobart, Australia. Two years ago, we saw the festivities in Adelaide, Australia and three years ago found us in DaNang, Vietnam. Other places I have spent NY eve include:  Aberdeen, Scotland; Brisbane, Australia; Dallas, TX, USA; Ibadan, Nigeria; Melbourne, Australia;  San Salvador, USA and Sydney, Australia. Future options are: New York, Paris and Reyjavik. This year the destination needs to be a short hop from Bangkok, Thailand as we only have four days. The options…

My Million Dollar Travel Plan Part 1.

A few weeks ago, I asked what people would do if they had a million dollars to spend in travel. This is what I would do… Travel is already a luxury. For those of us able to afford to travel on aeroplanes to distant countries puts us in a very special, blessed and lucky category. Out of my million dollars, I would immediately give a chunk  away with $50,000 each to the following five charities.:  The Railway Children  for street children work in East Africa Medecins sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders)  to support 30,000+ volunteers who provide medicine and surgery,…

I told you so! Kiwi Regional Folds

I have seen so many airlines come and go. Fine ideas that seemed great have resulted in so many failures. I gave Kiwi Regional Airlines six months. I am not proud to say, I was almost right. I was out by one month. The carrier closed after nine months of flying. The decision to close was made after seven months. The good news is that their plane (yes one plane), engineers and staff are being transferred to Air Chathams. The routes are gone -again. Sadly, so have their beautiful luggage tags. NZ is a very tough…

ANA’s Spectacular Star Wars C3PO Jet joins the ANA Star Wars Fleet

Last Friday, at a Star Wars Celebration Europe event in London, Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) launched their latest Star Wars themed jet: C3PO. In a deal signed with Disney, one of their 777-200s will carry the bright gold C3PO colours for five years from March 2017. The plane will operate on domestic routes across Japan. The plane’s interior will reportedly duplicate the theme with seat headrests mimicking the golden droid. Contrary to rumour, C3PO robots will not be serving the drinks on board.  This video was launched with the announcement. Even if you are not a Star Wars…

Inching to Qantas Platinum

One of my travel goals this year was to re-obtain my Qantas Airways Platinum status. I have until July 31 to achieve 1400 status credits which is the threshold. With two weeks to go, the goal is achievable: For my non-flying friends, they are somewhat bemused by this obsession. For those who fly a lot, they understand what is going on! I even did one mileage run to reach this goal. Qantas Platinum is the equivalent of oneworld Emerald status giving First Class Check in, First Class lounge access, dedicated phone support, extra luggage and double…

Ethiopian’s 350 takes flight.

On June 29, Ethiopian Airlines collected its first A350XWB becoming the seventh operator of the type after Cathay Pacific Airways, Finnair, LATAM Airlines, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Vietnam Airlines. They are the first African Airline to take delivery of the A50. It’s first 350 is named Simien Mountains, after the world heritage site Ethiopian mountain range. To celebrate, the airlines achieved the world record of creating the largest ever human image of an aircraft with 350 members of staff standing in formation wearing bright yellow uniforms.  The Guinness World Records adjudicators verified the record! Ethiopian’s first…
