Air Malta Flight Fails to Soar

The choices for a direct flight between Milano, Italy and the stunning island of Malta were between Air Malta or Ryanair, who I avoid flying at all costs. I was keen to try Air Malta, the tiny flag carrier, which has been financially struggling for a long time. But, when I booked this flight, I hadn’t anticipated the October 3rd announcement that the current Air Malta will be shut down in March next year. To make matters “more interesting”, Italy had a general transport strike on the day I departed Milan, which caused delays or…

Journey to the Isle of Man: A Wonderful Adventure

Let me take you on a journey around the Isle of Man (or Mann), a unique destination that offers visitors a rich history, stunning natural scenery, and a huge variety of activities. Located in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland, the Isle of Man is a self-governing British Overseas Territory with its own government, parliament, and judicial system. Therefore, I counted it as the 84th country/territory I have visited! The Isle of Man is most known for the annual TT Races, one of the world’s most famous motorcycle races, attracting thousands of visitors yearly.…

I have flown (and ranked) every One World Member Airline

With my recent hop from Casablanca to Doha, with Royal Maroc Airlines, I have now flown every one of the 13 One World airline members. The One World Alliance was formed in 1999 and includes 13 airlines which carry half a billion passengers a year via 14,000 flights a day. Each airline continues to operate independently but through the Alliance, they “work together to deliver consistently a superior, seamless travel experience“. One World has two major benefits for me. The first is the ability to earn frequent flyers points across the entire alliance. I use…

Stepping off my 1500th flight!

I am thrilled/stunned/amused/shocked to find that following my most recent flight from Manila to Melbourne, I have now flown 1,500 times!!!! This milestone feels like a significant achievement! 86 times, almost 87 times around this earth and nine times the distance to the moon! In 1968 I stepped onto my first plane and I was hooked! When I was a kid, I had flown so often that I begged my parents to take us by train from Nigeria to Australia instead of flying!! I have decided that for me, there are so many highlights of…

Vanishing Skies: Airlines that collapsed in 2022

It has been a couple of years since I have been focussed on writing about vanishing airlines. The last couple of years have been a bit crazy, haven’t they? The airline industry in 2022 was marred by a mad scramble to get flights back across the world. For passengers, our experiences have been marked by crowded conditions, lost luggage, massive delays and high airfares. In the midst of that, several carriers went bust. Of the airlines, that ceased in 2022, two were ones I was really sad about (Comair/Kalulua). One had an interesting concept and…

What to do with Virgin Australia

Once upon a time in 2000, Virgin entered the Australian airline market as a low cost carrier challenger. Months after its arrival, it found itself in a unique position as one of the country’s two main airlines (Ansett) collapsed in the wake of 11 September 2001. Qantas expanded to fill the vacuum left by Ansett. Virgin Blue nipped at their heels for over a decade. Qantas even started a new discount airline Jetstar in 2003, to take on Virgin in the low cost market. In 2010, Virgin Blue became Virgin Australia, repositioning itself as a…

What is happening to Your Favourite Airline? [Updated]

Six months ago, the airline industry was facing a bumper year. While a small number of  airlines were struggling,  it seemed that most would do well. Take away  most of the global passengers because of COVID19, and we have already seen some airlines collapse  and we face losing more airlines. Governments have taken very different approaches to their airlines with some offering cash injections or loans with a variety of conditions, some offering nothing and some wanting to nationalise. Company by company, this is what is happening across the globe: Aegean-  March 26, Aegean Airlines…

In the quest for Cheap Fares – Seven Common Mistakes

I love saving money on my airfares. I have scored some great deals such as Business Class seats that have saved me thousands for a few tweaks of date or destination airport. These are the seven biggest mistakes I find people make in saving money on travel: Unreliable Airlines: When things go wrong, how likely is the airline going to be to help you? Is the airline selling cheap fares because they are in financial trouble? Expensive Extras:  Many customers though get “nickled and dimed”, saving money on a cheap fare, only to find they…

Two stunning Qatar 350 Flights- my best trips Ever

Qatar Airways has been my favourite airline for five years now in both economy and business  class. I have not yet had the privilege of flying Qatar first class. Today’s two stunning flights were from Bangkok to Doha and then Doha to Vienna. They were so good that I didn’t want to get off the plane at the end! Qatar Airways continues to edge out Emirates for my number one favourite carrier. At third place sits Cathay Pacific. Booking I find that Qatar Airways offers one of the most user-friendly online booking systems of any airline. They…

Alice Springs Surrounds- a Central Australia Journey

Entering the Centre of Australia is like entering a whole new world. The landscapes are alien, the animal unusual, the flies relentless, the stars stunning and the visitors surprisingly few. When people think of the centre of Australia, they often only think of Uluru, regarded as the spiritual heart of the continent. I have had the privilege of visiting “The Rock” five times in my life. It is a is mind blowingly wonderful place. The town of Alice Springs, 500 kilometers from Uluru, is home to a number of impressive sights which I am exploring…
