Cheap Flights, Cheap flights, Cheap flights

Following my post about Ryan Air and Aer Lingus last week, I was reminded of the fun song by Fascinating Aida: Cheap Flights. See if you recognise the situations! Be warned! Some strong language! We recieved an invitation in the post one Monday morn’ To attend our cousins wedding in the town where we were born The do was back in Kerry; so wishing to be frugal We trawled the ‘net to find some decent travel deals on Google Cheap flights, cheap flights, cheap as they can be, Bedad we found an airline selling flights…

Another Stunt: Ryanair v Aer Lingus -Episode 586!

The soap opera that is the Irish airline war continues… On one side is the lean mean low cost carrier Ryanair that has grown since 1991 to be Europe’s biggest low cost airline. Last year it carried more passenger’s than Air France-KLM on its 300 planes flying to 178 destinations in 30 countries. Their plane pictured above right has an Irish harp on the tail. On the other is the 25 per cent Irish government owned Aer Lingus, the country’s flag carrier which has shrunk services, changed its European model to “low cost”, dropped Business…

Ryanair to USA

Michael O’Leary the CEO of Ryanair likes to startle people with announcements. Who can forget his infamous promise to charge to use the lavatory in-flight? Or the news in March that the airline was buying 175 Boeing 737-800s for almost $US16 billion. On one of the takeover attempts of rival Irish airline Aer Lingus, last October, he promised $US150 fares on US to Ireland flights if the deal succeeded. He promised that the Aer Lingus brand would be kept: “We need a two-airline brand strategy,”. The takeover bid was thwarted but Ryanair owns 30 percent…

Ten Worst Airlines- 2012 [Updated]

I am often asked which airlines are best avoided.  Having flown for over 3040 hours (0ver 18 weeks of my life!) with 83 airlines, there are some clear differences between the best and the worst! I rate each flight I take for every factor from Booking to Check in to deplaning. and keep a tally of my rating using Flightmemory.com.  The scores averaged out give me the ranking of flights, airlines and airports. I have placed my score for each airline next to the airline name. Here is my list for of the 2012 worst airlines, starting from the…

Aer Lingus: Budapest to Dublin (updated)

Background Aer Lingus is the flag carrier and second biggest airline in Ireland. Operating since 1936, its name an Anglicisation of the Gaelic Aer Loingeas means “air fleet” . A lot has changed for Aer Lingus in the last six years not the least being the Irish economic situation. The government reduced its 85 per cent stake to 25 percent through a listing on the Stock Exchange in 2006. Ryanair, arch rival and biggest Irish airline has now picked up close to 30 percent and attempted three takeover bids in five years.Abu Dhabi-based and owned Etihad…

Trying Spirit-First Time

A lot of miles to cover this week. Seven flights to three countries with four airlines. Qantas: Melbourne to Auckland, NZ via Sydney  Virgin Australia: Melbourne to  Los Angeles in Premium Economy product. Any Virgin Australia 777 flyers have any recommendation as to the better Premium Economy seats? Spirit: I chose Spirit deliberately so I could see what they are like as I have never flown them. Wish me luck for that flight! Spirit are supposed to be a little like Ryanair (who I hate flying with). I am fascinated to see. Related Posts Why is…

Website: “I Hate Ryanair” to close!

One passenger (Robert Tyler) who disliked Ryanair immensely set up ihateryanair.co.uk in February 2007. The site has acted as a place for passengers to share horror stories. In January 2010, Mr Tyler began accepting ads on the site which earnt him 365 pounds.  Ryanair then took Mr Tyler to a domain name tribunal complaining “that the site took unfair advantage of the Ryanair name for commercial gain.” The adjudicator agreed saying: “It cannot be fair to take advantage of the reputation attached to another party’s trade mark in this manner, whether it be good or bad.” and has demanded that the…

Why is Ryanair so bad?

Ryanair is the discount airline that everyone loves to hate.  Yet, they fly more international passengers than Lufthansa. Staggeringly they carry more international passengers than British Airways  and Air France combined. They operate   250 Boeing 737-800 aircraft on over 1,100 routes across Europe. While, my experiences with Ryanair have been okay. I rate them only 3 out of 5 which makes them my eighth most disliked airline! Tripadviser earlier in 2010 declared Ryanair to be the worst for amenities (4th year in a row). Reasons why Ryanair is disliked: Ryanair charge very low fares and then add extras like luggage and…

Six Low Cost Carrier’s Real Fare costs

I have significant frustration with all of the “extras”, most discount airlines charge and get away with. I understand that airlines want to charge us for our choices (eg carrying a bags on board or choosing to sit at an emergency exit seat).  I don’t agree, however for paying for an everyday seat on the plane. I think it wrong to demand I pay by Credit Card and then charge me a fee to do so. To show taxes as extra also annoys me. I can’t personally make those suckers optional. They should be included in the base…
