Hobbits are known for doing lots of hiking (in NZ Tramping) but not much flying. I (and ten million others) have been immensely enjoying Air New Zealand’s Hobbit safety video which has been playing since November, 2o12. Featuring many Lord of The Rings Characters and a Gandalf as pilot with orc passengers, the briefing presents its serious message in a light hearted and clever manner. Not sure how I would feel about those Orcs on board! It is better than the current (and annoying) Qantas cricket team safety briefing.

Air NZ becomes Air AllBlacks in brilliant new safety video
I have been a huge fan of Air New Zealand safety videos and have run out of superlatives for their amazing productions over the years (with one exception). But lets face it, the Qantas safety video brings a tear to my eye and the Oman ones are cool too so I may just be a softie for a good air safety video presentation. Their newest one, launched this week and which apparently took nine months to make will be hard for Aussies, South Africans and French people to sit through as it hammers home the…
Air NZ Worst safety ad -pulled. What went wrong?
I have not met anyone who has disliked the highly creative Air New Zealand safety briefings until now. After hree months of criticism from NZ Politicians, celebrities, and the public, the airline has pulled their latest $2.5m safety ad: The video took American hip hop ground Run DMC’s 1987 hit “It’s tricky” and replaced “tricky” with “Kiwi”. The jingle was “It’s Kiwi to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that’s safe and fly,” It starred Kiwi actor Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Deadpool2), local musicians Kings, Theia and Randa and talent from 30…
New Turkish vid combines humour, safety, Lego and planes!
The boring safety announcements are looking more and more endangered as airlines increasingly use their on board safety videos to differentiate their brand. The videos are designed to grab your attention and build your awareness of who you are flying with. Whoever in the Turkish airlines marketing department managed to involve the Lego franchise was a genius. Everyone (especially if you have small and big kids) will be remembering this video. If you are familiar with The Lego Movies, then the characters and some of their behaviors will be familiar to you. The safety video…
Air New Zealand Safety Video: Cool or Cruel?
I have been pondering about what to say about Air New Zealand’s safety video. On 28th November 1979, Air New Zealand flight TE 901 took off from Auckland for a sightseeing flight over Antarctica. Due to a computing error, the McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 slammed into Mount Erebus a 3,794 metre (12,448 ft) volcano located on Ross Island. All 237 passengers and 20 crew were killed. This was followed by complex search and rescue mission and a bitter and complicated investigation. There was such grief in NZ as the small nation felt connected to the disaster…
That cute Air NZ Christmas ad could have better sold NZ
Air New Zealand’s latest ad mocks the Kiwi (New Zealander) accent with its different vowel pronunciations and emphases. Air New Zealand crew save the day by fixing the linguistic glitches… It is a cute ad but one wonders if this is the best that Air New Zealand can come up with? The country punches above its weight internationally has some of the most amazing scenery in the world and just elected its third woman Prime Minister. The country has a lot to be proud of. And Australians, South Africans, Liverpudlians and Glaswegians all have their own unique…
Air NZ does it yet again! A take on Winter Wonderland -Southern Hemisphere style
Air New Zealand engaged Ronan Keating to re-write Winter Wonderland so it makes sense for New Zealand summer! The song is directed by Julian Dennison who this year starred in Hunt for the Wilderpeople (and before that Paper Planes and Shopping). Dennison suggests more and more New Zealand references (some of which won’t make much sense to people outside the country). Eventually Keating storms out… There is a happy ending though and the two end up composing a “Summer Wonderland”, a Christmas song that makes sense for Kiwis. Makes you proud to be from the Southern…
Qantas goes outdoors with its iconic safety video
I love a good safety video! No idea how many I have sat through now over the years! It ius now April and I have sat through the 2016 Qantas video 23 times. It runs for 5min 28 secs so I have spent two hours listening to it! Initially, I was a little dismissive but every time I see it, I am mesmerised. This year, Qantas opted for an enthralling collection of 16 Australian iconic locations introduced by real people to build its safety instructions around: This year, Qantas opted for an enthralling collection of 16 Australian…
Air NZ Men in Black Safety Video
Air New Zealand have released a new safety video which features members of the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team rapping in a parody of “Men in Black”. Captain Richie McCaw and team member Dan Carter appear as “Men in Black” agents. Team mates Kieran Read, Keven Mealamu and Sam Whitelock can be spotted. Fullback Israel Dagg raps the in-flight briefing with Stan Walker, winner of the 2009 Australian Idol. American actor Rip Torn is the Men in Black chief. Other international rugby stars make appearances including former England Captain Martin Johnson as an alien with horns, David Campese of the Wallabies and…
Air NZ: 75 years – nothing has changed
This hilarious commercial invites people to an exhibition celebrating of Air New Zealand by showing nothing has changed in that time. Well worth the 46 seconds as the video shows images from the early Trans Empire Air Lines (TEAL) Days to the current Air NZ days. From flying boats to 747s. The exhibition is on at the country’s national museum Te Papa, in the capital Wellington. Air New Zealand, began as a flying boat operator TEAL in 1940. It adopted the current name in 1965. Their 106 aeroplanes currently fly to 58 airports. I have flown Air New Zealand 44…
