My Passport is in my luggage

As I stood at the Check in counter, I watched a gentleman return to the check in counter in a very agitated state. He attempted to clamber onto the luggage conveyor belt over the check in desk and was grasping at bags. He was exclaiming loudly:  “I have left my passport in my luggage” Sigh! Passports never live in luggage, along with Medicines and Jewellery. The man was restrained from going any further with promises being made that his bag would be retrieved.

Wednesday Weirdness- I wanna pay my way

At the Union Square Metro station in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Sunday, an agitated British Backpacker was trying to pay his 4.50 Dirhams metro fare with a British pound coin. He argued with the woman at the ticket counter. He reasoned with her and finally he pleaded with her. “This pound is worth 5.50 Dirhams why won’t you take it? Its worth more!’”. He looked around seeking help from the long line forming behind him. I said to him, tryig to pay with pounds on the dirham metro would be like someone trying to pay with Dirhams in the London Underground. “Thats different” he said “these…

Stay Away from Seattle

Theres a very strange website around which called people to “Stay away from Seattle“.  Apparently September 16 is “Stay Away from Seattle Day. It is meant to  “give ‘America’s Best Place to Live’ city a break from the influx of people moving to the area.“ Tourists bring 5.5 billion dollars into Seattle every year but not everyone wants them it seems – at least one day a year. There have been a few places in the world that I have been to where I have wondered if people actually want tourists. I have never been made to feel really unwelcome but I have wondered. Many…

Who ya gonna blame?

I was bemused by the following Tweet: 30 minutes late into #Canberra with @virginaustralia. Hope the service is more efficient on the return flight this afternoon #epicfail Epic fail? It turns out that the Twitterer had been late for a very important meeting. I wish I could be more sympathetic but an aeroplane flight is a very complex juggling act:  weather airport traffic mechanics of the plane crew  Any of those things can go wrong. I leave a minimum margin of four hours. For example, I do everything I can not to fly into a city for a morning meeting…

Air India to start 787 service to Melbourne in October! NO!

Media Reports are full of the news that:  “Melbourne will be the first Australian city to receive scheduled 787 service when Air India deploys the aircraft on its new Delhi-Melbourne route in October.” (Flightglobal.com). Seeing that’s my home city, I took an interest. Context first: This news came amidst celebrations accompanying the touchdown of a 787 at Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi. Air India has 27 of the planes on order and got $45million in compensation for their delayed delivery (three years now). Air India is the number two customer for the 787 after Japan’s ANA.…

Airbus Hail Storm

I have been in a bird strike where the windscreen of a small plane was shattered as were taking off from Kirkwall airport in the UK. These images of what hail can do to an Airbus 330 are astounding. This must have been quite a storm. The Emirates A330-200  (registration A6-EAP) was en route from Dubai, UAE to Munich, Germany as flight EK501.  The plane went through a hail zone, 30 nautical miles south of Vienna, Austria. The crew decided to divert and landed safely at Prague, Czech Republic 40 minutes later. Passengers then travelled by…

Don’t sneak your Business Class drinks out!

Got an upgrade to business class with United Airlines from Houston to New Orleans but my friend Betty didn’t. She asked me to get her a Baileys. So I ordered a Baileys from the cabin attendant and “snuck” it down to Betty in the economy cabin. The flight attendant was not amused. She told my friend Betty off in no uncertain terms and then came to me: “we dont allow our crockery into the coach cabin.” Naughty me! Am I banned from United business class for life?
