Cornwall sits at the westernmost part of the south-west of Great Britain and as a result is often left off people’s travel itineraries. I believe Cornwall needs to sit at the top of people’s lists of destinations to visit in the UK. Around five million people visit annually but most are from England. Aesthetics: 10 out of 10 Cornwall covers an area of 3,563 sq km (1,376 sq mi). It is a little bigger than Rhode Island and one and a half times the size of Australia’s ACT. Its population is 535,300 people. Some of the most stunning landscapes in…
Exit Row “safety”?
I was flying Turkish Air from Istanbul to Budapest. I have already commented in a previous post that I find it odd that on this flight English and Turkish are used but no one on the Cabin Crew seems to speak Hungarian. I was seated in the Emergency Exit aisle. Next to me in the middle and window seats were two gentlemen who spoke only Hungarian. One of the flight attendants came down for a briefing. She says in Turkish followed by English: “You are aware that you are sitting in the Emergency Exit?” Middle Seat guy beams at…
Delta First Class Delight
For many years, I refused to fly Delta. My re discovery of them has been a great experience and this recent almost perfect flight was confirmation that Delta have a lot to offer these days. Booking 10 out of 10 The Delta.com web site is very straightforward and gave fare options for both First Class and Coach. The booking engine flows well, is logical and a pleasure to use. When making my seat selection, I chose 1C being the only seat left in the front row of First Class. Check in: 10 out of 10 Delta has a great…

Virgin America Verges on Good bye?
Virgin America are my favourite US airline but accumulated losses are approaching $US671 million. How long will this be tolerated for? I recently read a great post about Virgin America by Brad Tuttle. He says they are “failing”. My interpretation from his article, is that he is saying, like many airlines before them, Virgin are suffering from the syndrome: Great Airline- lousy business. This phrase was coined by former Ansett CEO Rod Eddington before that airline collapsed. What do you think? Virgin America Safety Briefing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6ixjc5yeMU
Credit Card Compatibility Fails
In Washington DC, last week, I inserted my Visa card into a subway ticket machine to buy a metro card so I could ride the trains. The machine requested I type in my five digit zip code. I don’t have one as it is an Australian card. I entered the four digits of my Australian postal code. Not accepted. So I tried again but added a “0”at the start of the four digits. Believe it or not, this sometimes works in other machines! Not accepted, this time. I then entered 00000 which I have also successfully used in some other machines. I still could not use…
Trip Report: Air France to London City
My 920th flight was also my first flight into London City. As a result of this flight, I have now flown into and/or out of every one of London’s five airports. The other are: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stanstead and Luton. London City Airport was opened in 1987 after six years of planning and construction. The airport is located within the newly developed Docklands precinct of London (11 km: 6.9 miles) from the City of London. In 2011, the Airport served nearly 3 million passengers. Booking: 9 out of 10 This flight was operated as an Air France service by its subsidiary CityJet.…
Splitting Rail Journeys- Saving Money
This is a trick I have utilised in Australia, the Uk and USA. This weekend I needed to travel from Penzance in the south of England to Manchester in the North west. A distance of 639km / 397 miles. The cheapest ticket was 169 Pounds in Standard (Economy) Class. This is around $US269. So I split the journey up and booked three tickets: Penzance to Exeter ( 21a km / 13a miles). I found a fare for 12 pounds on First Great Western trains Exeter to Bristol (12s km / 76 miles) The cheapest ticket was 24 pounds in Economy but I…
Remembrance Day Ponderings
November 11 is Remembrance Day across most of the previous British Commonwealth countries and Vetrans Day in the USA. Wherever you are, may all those who served in war be acknowledged today. My Grandfather was injured twice in World War One. .He enlisted in 1916 at the age of 22 and was sent to Europe. Shells and shrapnel caem close to narrowly taking him from us. So many of his friends were lost, however. Some lost as a result of the very shell that my grandpa survived. Were my late Grandfather ear efforts successful? I would dearly love for him to know he made a difference.…
