Malaysia‘s defence and transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein told a press conference that “The number of countries involved in the search and rescue operation has increased from 14 to 25“. Celebrating Women Pilots on IWD
Yesterday was International Women’s Day and I spent part of the day wondering why we have so few pilots who are women? Of the 53,000 members of the Air Line Pilots Association, only 5 percent are female. According to the International Society of Women Airline Pilots, there are only about 450 women worldwide serving as airline captains. Of the major airlines Qantas female Pilots are around 3.6 per cent while at American it is four percent. At British Airways it is just under six percent. Most of the Western world knows that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is responsible for safety and security at US airports. Airlines that vanished in 2013
Twenty carriers disappeared in 2013 compared to twenty-six 2012 . Six of them were based in Eastern Europe/former USSR countries. Most of the carriers were small regional airlines with tiny fleets. Kingfisher of India was only one carrier that could have been considered major, although it has been some time since they were India’s largest airline. The soap opera that is the Irish airline war continues… On one side is the lean mean low cost carrier Ryanair that has grown since 1991 to be Europe’s biggest low cost airline. Michael O’Leary the CEO of Ryanair likes to startle people with announcements. Who can forget his infamous promise to charge to use the lavatory in-flight? Or the news in March that the airline was buying 175 Boeing 737-800s for almost $US16 billion.
