Malaysia’s air force chief Rodzali Daud has suggested that the missing Boeing 777 jet may have turned back from its scheduled route to Beijing before disappearing. Sun rises on a new day in Malaysia

Sunrise this morning in Malaysia is at 0722am local time today. With the sun rise comes a bewildering lack of answers as to how one of the world’s safest aeroplanes flown by a five star airline suddenly vanished off radar screens on a routine flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The weather was clear with no warnings. The signs point to a catastrophic event for Malaysia Airlines MH 370.  If there had been a mechanical failure,  the pilot should have been able to radio for help. Did the plane suddenly break up and/or went into a very steep dive, similar to…

Vietnamese search planes have spotted two oil slicks in the crash site area, 140 kilometres (90miles) south of Tho Chu island off Southern Vietnam. The  two oil slicks were each 10-15 kilometers long (six to ten miles) and about 500 meters apart.  These could be from the jet engines.   Ships have been sent to the site and we will wait for further information as soon as it comes to hand. Malaysia Airlines had said the air search would be called off until Sunday morning local time. Relatives of MH370 victims are still waiting for the…

Qatar 5 star: Hanoi to Bangkok

Qatar have been my favourite airline for over a year now. Based in the Middle Eastern kingdom of the same name, the airline has been growing aggressively adding destinations, planes and crew at a rapid pace. Along the way, they seem to have maintained their quality. The airline, has in more recent years become profitable. Last year, they joined the One World network and this week announced they were forming a Saudi Arabian subsidiary: Al Maha. Skytrax list Qatar as one of the few five star airlines in the world, along with Asiana, ANA, Cathay…

Asiana crash lands @SFO [updated]

It has been a relatively quiet year for plane crashes. On July 6, 2013, however, the Korean airline Asiana Airlines experienced a crash. Their flight 214 on approach to San Francisco International Airport from Seoul crashed after reportedly clipping a sea wall. The crash landing sheared off the plane’s landing gear and tore the tail off from the rest of the fuselage. It then burst into flames. The Boeing 777 had 307 people on board (291 passengers and 16 crew). The passengers included 141 Chinese nationals, 77 South Koreans, 61 Americans, three Indians, three Canadians, one French,…

Perfection 777th flight on an NZ B777

After 43 years of flying I flew on my 777th flight. In a previous Blog post, I was trying to decide whether to fly my 777th on an Air New Zealand or V Australia 777. I appreciated the advice from friends to try Air NZ’s new 777-300 and was glad I did. I have recently blogged about V’s superb business class product on the 777-300. This Air NZ flight gave me lots of opportunity for comparison. For those who haven’t been following: I flew #737 on a Southwest B737, #747 on a Qantas B747, #757 with United and #767…
